As we continue to look at symbolism and allegory, I am really impressed with how well these 8th grade minds are able to pick up on not only the concept, but examples in everyday life AND in the short story we're reading.
Looking at a work such as Nathaniel Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown is not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination. I am encouraged by the willingness of the students to attempt reading the story and not give up when it seems too confusing or some of the language seems too advanced. They are learning, not only about the concept, but about how willing they are to push themselves and to what extent they're willing to do so. I am very proud of their efforts and look forward to challenging them throughout the rest of the school year. Until next time -- - Mr. Mazzuca

As you can probably determine from the title of this post, our first unit in this literacy class is going to be looking at allegories and understanding how they work.
To do this, the students were treated, this morning, to a sample work of American Lit; a poem titled Because I Could Not Stop For Death by the great Emily Dickinson. Together, we decoded the text and looked at the meaning of the words and the suggestions that Dickinson was making through this poem. As we look to study allegory, we are going to pull from another great American author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and his short story Young Goodman Brown. This story, set in a strong Puritan society in early America, is a stunning example of how allegory is used as a technique to share ideas and information without have to come right out and say it. As we wrap up this story, a fun follow-up project opportunity will soon follow. Until then -- - Mr. Mazzuca Hello, students and parents!
