As we continue to discuss this concept of allegory in writing, an interesting question was posed: was any of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown true? Well, no. It's a work of fiction.
But-- What true events may have inspired parts of his story? To find out, we are reading true accounts of the Salem witch trials. How much of our early settler history may have influenced Nathaniel Hawthorne? That's what we're going to find out. Once we wrap up the witches (does that make them mummies?), we are going to continue to look at the concept of allegory, with a focus on African-American expression. Poems, stories, and songs that depict, in some way, what living as an African-American was like during the 1930s. This will also serve as an introduction to To Kill A Mockingbird, which the students will be starting in Language Arts soon. Until next time -- - Mr. Mazzuca
