Since the beginning of the school year, as a way to help the students better understand To Kill A Mockingbird, which they will be reading in their Language Arts classes, we have been looking at what allegory is and how it works.
We have read Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne, listened to a recording of Strange Fruit by Billie Holliday, and read I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. All of these pieces, be them stories, or songs, or poems, work as allegories, as the authors are trying to share a bigger message by way of using symbolism. As we continue to study allegories, the students will have an opportunity to display their knowledge and understanding of allegories by writing one of their own. But that will come in time. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. - Mr. Mazzuca
